Generic Cipro belongs to a group called fluoroquinolones. Generic Cipro is bactericidal. Single cell organisms, called bacteria, cause many common infections in humans. Bacteria can grow and multiply, infecting different parts of the body. Generic Cipro is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body.
Active Ingredients: Ciprofloxacin
Inactive Ingredients: crospovidone; magnesium stearate; cornstarch; microcrystalline cellulose; silicon dioxide; hypromellose; titanium dioxide and polyethylene glycol.
What is Generic “Brand name” PRESCRIBED For?
Generic Cipro is an antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria like:
- pneumonia (lung infection);
- bronchitis (infection of the tubes that lead to the lungs);
- some types of gonorrhea (a sexually transmitted disease);
- diarrhea caused by bacteria;
- typhoid fever (a contagious illness common in developing countries);
- bone, joint, skin, prostate (a male reproductive gland) sinus, and urinary tract (bladder) infections.
Generic Cipro can be prescribed to prevent and/or treat anthrax in people exposed to anthrax germs in the air and certain infections of the internal organs.
Generic Cipro extended release (long-acting) tablets are used to treat urinary tract and kidney infections.
How Should I Take Generic Cipro?
Generic Cipro is taken orally. Swallow a whole tablet with a full glass of water. It is better to take Generic Cipro on an empty stomach, but it can be administrated with meals also. However, one hour before or two hours after meals is the preferred time.
You should avoid taking generic Cipro with dairy products such as milk or yogurt or calcium-fortified juices.
Your health care professional depending on your case should indicate the dose. The doses should be taken at regular intervals. While taking Generic Cipro follow the directions of your health care professional.
Do not stop taking except on your doctor’s advice. Contact your health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic Cipro?
Generic Cipro may be harmful to an unborn baby. If you are pregnant or plan to be pregnat stop using this medicine. Generic Cipro passes into breast milk and therefore it is contraindicated to women that are breast-feeding.
Generic Cipro is contrainidicated if you are planning on having any surgery, including dental surgery.
Generic Cipro should not be taken by persons that ever had:
- an allergic reaction to any drug;
- epilepsy;
- heart disease
- history of stroke;
- kidney disease;
- liver disease;
- tendonitis.
What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time.
NOTE: Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
What happens if I OVERDOSE?
Symptoms of an overdose with Generic Cipro overdose may include seizures, urination problems, weakness, or blue lips with pale skin. If an overdose is suspected call your local emergency immediately.
What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic Cipro?
There are side effects that should be reported immediately to your health care professional. They include:
- difficulty breathing;
- fever;
- hallucinations;
- increased sensitivity to the sun or ultraviolet light;
- irregular heartbeat, palpitations or chest pain;
- joint, muscle or tendon pain;
- nervousness, excitability, restlessness;
- reduced amount of urine;
- severe or watery diarrhea;
- skin rash, itching; seizures (convulsions);
- swelling of the face or neck;
- unusual pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness; vomiting.
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention are:
- diarrhea;
- difficulty sleeping;
- dizziness, drowsiness;
- headache; nausea; stomach upset.
What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic Cipro?
Many antibiotics, including Generic Cipro, can alter the normal bacteria in the colon and encourage overgrowth of a bacteria responsible for the development of inflammation of the colon (pseudomembranous colitis). Pseudomembranous colitis can cause fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and sometimes even shock. Patients taking Generic Cipro can develop sensitivity of the skin to direct sunlight. Generic Cipro can enhance the action of the anticoagulant warfarin (Coumadin), and increase the risk of bleeding.
Generic Cipro administered together with theophylline can lead to elevated blood levels of theophylline. If concurrent use of Generic Cipro and theophylline cannot be avoided, frequent blood tests to monitor theophylline blood levels are performed. Generic Cipro should be used with caution in patients with central nervous system diseases such as seizures, because rare seizures have been reported in patients receiving this medication.
Generic Cipro should be avoided in children and adolescents under 18 years old, as safe use in these patients have not been established.
Additional Information
Generic Cipro can make your skin more sensitive to the sun's ultraviolet rays. When you first begin taking this drug, limit sun exposure and do not use a sunlamp until you see how your skin responds to short periods of exposure to ultraviolet light. This is especially important if you tend to sunburn easily.
