CLASS and MECHANISM of Action
Generic Cozaar tablets belong to a class of drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). Generic Cozaar works by blocking the angiotensin receptor. This way Generic Cozaar dilates blood vessels and thereby reduces blood pressure.
Generic Cozaar is indicated to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), but there is evidence that this benefit does not apply to black patients.
Active Ingredients: Losartan potassium
Inactive Ingredients: microcrystalline cellulose, lactose hydrous, pregelatinized starch, magnesium stearate, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hypromellose, titanium dioxide, D&C yellow No. 10 aluminum lake and FD&C blue No. 2 aluminum lake.
What is Generic Cozaar PRESCRIBED For?
Generic Cozaar has been shown to reduce the risk of stroke in people who have high blood pressure together with an enlargement in the left side of their heart (left ventricular hypertrophy). This medicine has also been shown to delay the progression of kidney disease in people with type II diabetes. If you have diabetic kidney disease you may be prescribed Generic Cozaar for this reason, regardless of whether or not you also have high blood pressure.
How Should I Take Generic Cozaar?
Generic Cozaar is administrated orally. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Commonly it is taken once a day with or without food. In order to get the most benefit from using Generic Cozaar take it regularly. Potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium are contraindicated while taken Generic Cozaar. This medicine can raise your potassium levels, which rarely can cause serious side effects such as muscle weakness or very slow heartbeats.
If Generic Cozaar is prescribed for high blood pressure then it may take 3 to 6 weeks before the full benefit of this drug occurs.
Keep out of the reach of children; store away from heat and direct light.
Do not store in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in other damp places.
Heat or moisture may cause the medicine to break down.
Keep the medicine from freezing. Do not refrigerate.
Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.
What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic Cozaar?
Generic Cozaar is contraindicated in patients:
- who are hypersensitive to any component of these products;
- with anuria;
- with hypersensitivity to other sulfonamide-derived drugs;
- who are volume-depleted;
- with severe renal impairment;
- who have angioedema;
- that are pregnant or plan to be pregnant;
- that are breast-feeding.
Generic Cozaar is not recommended as a means of titration for patients with hepatic impairment because the 25-mg starting dose of Generic Cozaar cannot be administrated.
Before taken Generic Cozaar make sure that your health care professional knows about all medicines that you are usually taking as well as about all the prescribed and non-prescribed drugs including herbal substances.
What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?
If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take your next dose when you are meant to. Otherwise, take it as soon as you remember, and then go back to taking your tablet(s) as you would normally.
NOTE: Do not take a double dose to make up for the dose that you missed.
What happens if I OVERDOSE?
The symptoms of a Generic Cozaar overdose: hypotension and tachycardia. Bradycardia could occur from parasympathetic (vagal) stimulation. If an overdose is suspected call your health care professional and your local emergency room immediately.
What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic Cozaar?
Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your jealth care professional as soon as possible. Only he can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Generic Cozaar. More common side effects may include:
- Cough;
- Dizziness;
- Upper respiratory infection.
People taking Generic Cozaar for diabetic kidney disease have reported other side effects, such as weakness and chest pain. Severe allergic reactions, including swelling of the face and throat, are also a possibility.
What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic Cozaar?
If Generic Cozaar is taken with certain other drugs, the effects either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your health care professional before taking Cozaar with the following:
- Indomethacin (Indocin)
- Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
- Troleandomycin (Tao)
- Diuretics that leave potassium in the body, such as Aldactone, triamterene, and amiloride;
The antihypertensive effect of Generic Cozaar may be reduced by nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (e.g., indomethacin, ibuprofen, aspirin , and naproxen).
