CLASS and MECHANISM of Action
Generic "Pravachol" is an HMG CoA reductase inhibitor, it is used to lower cholesterol, a white waxy substance that can stick to the inside of blood vessels, resulting in clogged arteries, heart disease, and strokes. It works by slowing down the body’s ability to make cholesterol.
Active ingredient: pravastatin sodium
Other Ingredients: magnesium oxide, magnesium stearate, croscarmellose, lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone and sodium.
What is generic "Pravachol" PRESCRIBED For?
Generic "Pravachol" is used to reduce the amounts of LDL (bad) cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides (another type of fat), and apolipoprotein B (a protein needed to make cholesterol) in your blood. These actions are important in reducing the risk of hardening of the arteries, which can lead to heart attacks, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.
Generic "Pravachol" may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
How Should I Take generic "Pravachol"
Take Generic "Pravachol" exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
- Take each dose with a full glass of water.
- For the greatest effect, Generic "Pravachol" is usually taken at bedtime or with an evening meal. It may also be taken several times a day. Follow your doctor's instructions.
- Your doctor may want to monitor your liver function with blood tests before starting treatment with Generic "Pravachol" and at twelve weeks after both the start of your treatment and any increase in dose. Depending on the results of these tests, your doctor can determine how much monitoring you will require.
- Eat a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet. To see beneficial effects from Generic "Pravachol", avoid fatty, high-cholesterol foods
- Do not stop taking Generic "Pravachol" without first talking to your doctor. Generic "Pravachol" may need to be taken on a long-term basis for the treatment of high cholesterol.
- Your doctor may want you to have blood tests or other medical evaluations during treatment with Generic "Pravachol" to monitor progress and side effects.

What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking generic "Pravachol"?
Do not take Generic "Pravachol"without first talking to your doctor if you have liver disease.
Before taking Generic "Pravachol", tell your doctor if you:
- have kidney disease,
- drink alcoholic beverages,
- have a chronic muscular disease, or
- have a blood disorder.
Your may not be able to take Generic "Pravachol", or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above.
Generic "Pravachol" is in the FDA pregnancy category X. This means that Generic "Pravachol" is known to cause birth defects if it is taken during pregnancy. Do not take Generic "Pravachol" if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.
Generic "Pravachol" passes into breast milk and may be harmful to a nursing infant. Do not take Generic "Pravachol" if you are breast-feeding a baby.
What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?
If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take your next dose when you are meant to. Do not take a double dose to make up for the dose that you missed.

What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of generic "Pravachol"?
Generic "Pravachol" may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if either of these symptoms is severe or does not go away: heartburn, headache.
Some side effects can be serious. The following symptoms are uncommon, but if you experience any of them, call your doctor immediately: muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness; lack of energy; fever; yellowing of the skin or eyes; pain in the upper right part of the stomach; nausea; extreme tiredness; unusual bleeding or bruising; loss of appetite; flu-like symptoms; rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing or swallowing; swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs; hoarseness.
Generic "Pravachol" may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication.
What other drugs can INTERACT with generic "Pravachol"?
Bile acid sequestrants such as cholestyramine (Questran) may significantly reduce the absorption of Generic "Pravachol" and therefore reduce its effect. Therefore, Generic "Pravachol"should be taken 1-4 hours after bile acid sequestrants.
The use of Generic "Pravachol" with nicotinic acid, gemfibrozil (Lopid) or other drugs that may cause liver or muscle problems may increase the incidence of such side effects.
