CLASS and MECHANISM of Action
Generic "Prilosec" decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach.
Generic "Prilosec" is in a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPI) which block the production of acid by the stomach. Generic "Prilosec", like other proton-pump inhibitors, blocks the enzyme in the wall of the stomach that produces acid. By blocking the enzyme, the production of acid is decreased, and this allows the stomach and esophagus to heal. Generic "Prilosec" OTC has been approved for sale without a prescription.
Active Ingredients: omeprazole
Inactive Ingredients: cellulos, disodium hydrogen phosphate, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hypromellose, lactose, mannitol, sodium lauryl sulfate and other ingredients.
What is Generic "Prilosec " PRESCRIBED For?
Generic "Prilosec" is used for treating acid-induced inflammation and ulcers of the stomach and duodenum, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome. It also is used in combination with antibiotics for eradicating H. pylori infection of the stomach.
Generic "Prilosec" is used to treat frequent heartburn. Heartburn occurs when the stomach contents back up and out of the stomach into the esophagus (the tube that connects the throat to the stomach). Frequent heartburn is when you have heartburn 2 or more days a week.
How Should I Take Generic "Prilosec "?
Generic "Prilosec" is usually taken before eating. Follow your doctor's instructions. Take each dose of Generic "Prilosec" with a full glass (8 ounces) of water.
Do not crush, break, or open a delayed-release capsule. Swallow the pill whole. It is specially made to release medicine slowly in the body. Breaking or opening the pill would cause too much of the drug to be released at one time. You may open the delayed-release capsule and sprinkle the medicine into a spoonful of applesauce to make swallowing easier. Swallow this mixture right away without chewing. Do not save the mixture for later use. Discard the empty capsule.
Generic "Prilosec" should be taken only once every 24 hours for 14 days. Take the medicine in the morning before you eat breakfast. It may take up to 4 days for full effect. Do not take more than one tablet every 24 hours.
Store at room temperature, 15-30°C (59-86°F). Keep away from moisture and light.
What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic "Prilosec "?
You may not be able to take Generic "Prilosec", or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring if you have ever had any type of liver disease.
Do not take Generic "Prilosec" without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment because Generic "Prilosec" can affect an unborn baby.
Do not use Generic "Prilosec" if you have trouble or pain with swallowing; vomiting blood; bloody or black stools; had heartburn for over 3 months; frequent chest pain; heartburn with wheezing; unexplained weight loss; nausea or vomiting; or stomach pain.
Do not take Generic "Prilosec" if you have:
- had an allergic reaction to Prilosec in the past
- trouble or pain swallowing food
- vomiting with blood
- bloody or black stools
What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?
Do not take a double dose of this medication unless your doctor directs otherwise. If you miss a dose take it as soon as possible but if it's high time for the next dose just skip the missed one and continue your usual schedule.
What Happens if I OVERDOSE?
If an overdose of Generic "Prilosec" is suspected seek emergency medical attention. Symptoms of Generic "Prilosec" overdose include drowsiness, seizures, shortness of breath, and decreased body temperature.
What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Prilosec"?
Although side effects from Generic "Prilosec" are not common, they can occur.
Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
- headache
- diarrhea
- constipation
- upset stomach
- vomiting
- stomach pain
- cough
- cold symptoms
- dizziness
- rash
What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Prilosec "?
When you are taking Generic "Prilosec", it is especially important that your health care provider know if you are taking any of the following:
- warfarin (blood-thinning medicine)
- prescription antifungal or anti-yeast medicines
- diazepam (anxiety medicine)
- digoxin (heart medicine)

There are no restrictions on food, beverages, or activities while taking Generic "Prilosec", unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
