CLASS and MECHANISM of Action
Generic "Vasotec" is in a class of drugs called angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors).
Generic "Vasotec" lowers blood pressure by decreasing production of a strong chemical in the body that increases blood pressure. This lowered blood pressure also protects the weakened heart and helps improve fluid removal from the body. Improvements in blood flow through the kidney helps the diabetic.
Active Ingredients: Enalapril maleate
Inactive Ingredients: magnesium stearate, starch, lactose, and other ingredients. The 2.5 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg tablets also contain iron oxides.

It is use to protect kidney function in diabetic patients who have protein loss. It is also used to improve symptoms of Raynaud's syndrome.
How Should I Take Generic "Vasotec"?
Take Generic "Vasotec" exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Do not stop taking Generic "Vasotec" without first talking to your doctor. If you stop taking this medication suddenly, your condition could become worse.
Store in a tight, light-resistant container at room temperature. Protect from moisture.
What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic "Vasotec"?
Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Generic "Vasotec" may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities and notify your doctor. Also use caution when rising from a sitting or lying position.
Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may further lower blood pressure and increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking Generic "Vasotec".
Do not use salt substitutes or potassium supplements while taking Generic "Vasotec" except under the direction of your doctor.
Heavy sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, or other causes of fluid loss may lead to very low blood pressure, dizziness, and fainting during therapy with Generic "Vasotec". Maintain proper fluid intake to prevent dehydration and related side effects.
What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?
Do not take a double dose of this medication unless your doctor directs otherwise. If you miss a dose take it as soon as possible but if it's high time for the next dose just skip the missed one and continue your usual schedule.
What Happens if I OVERDOSE?
Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. Symptoms of an Generic "Vasotec" overdose may include feeling extremely dizzy or light-headed, or fainting.
What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Vasotec"?
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; severe stomach pain; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
- feeling light-headed, fainting;
- urinating more or less than usual, or not at all;
- fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms;
- pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding;
- fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeats;
- chest pain; or
- swelling, rapid weight gain.
Less serious side effects may be more likely to occur, such as:
- cough;
- loss of taste sensation, loss of appetite;
- dizziness, drowsiness, headache;
- sleep problems (insomnia);
- dry mouth;
- nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain; or
- mild skin itching or rash.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Vasotec"?
Before taking Generic "Vasotec", tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs:
- a potassium supplement such as K-Dur, Klor-Con, and others;
- salt substitutes that contain potassium;
- any of the diuretics (water pills) triamterene (Dyrenium, Maxzide, Dyazide), spironolactone (Aldactone), or amiloride (Midamor);
- any other diuretic (water pill) such as hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, HydroDiuril, others), furosemide (Lasix), bumetanide (Bumex), indapamide (Lozol), and others; or
- lithium (Lithobid, Eskalith, others).
You may not be able to take Generic "Vasotec", or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during your treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed above.
