CARMEL PHARMACY CLOSED AFTER CAR SLAMS INTO BUILDING
Date: 21-May-2007
Author: Terence Corcoran
CARMEL -The Rite Aid pharmacy in the Putnam Plaza was ordered closed today after a 72-year-old Carmel woman lost control of her car and slammed into the front of the store, compromising the structural integrity of the building.
Carmel building officials ordered the business closed until the wall can be shored up, Carmel Fire Chief Daryl Johnson said.
The accident happened around 9:45 a.m. when the woman in a Chevrolet Cobalt jumped a curb in the parking lot, then accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, sending the car careening into the store's brick exterior wall, police said.
George Wahlen, a store manager, said that customers needing to fill prescriptions could go to the Mahopac store at 159 Route 6 or the Southeast store at 1511 Route 22 in the Lakeview Plaza to get their prescriptions filled.
"It's all on the same computer system, so we can fill any prescription at those locations," Whalen said.
He said he hoped repairs would be done quickly so the store could reopen by tomorrow.
The driver was taken by Carmel Ambulance to Putnam Hospital Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Johnson said. No one else was hurt.
Carmel police and Putnam Sheriff's deputies also responded to the call, which Carmel police are investigating.
